IVR Call Flow Examples with Menus and Routing

Short answer: An IVR call flow is the map of what a caller hears and presses: greeting, menu choices, actions such as reading an order status, and routing to a person. Good flows have few options per menu, short prompts, a clear way to reach an agent and a fallback when the caller does nothing. Below are three flows you can adapt: order status, appointment confirmation and a support menu.

These are design examples, not a record of any one customer. To build one, see the IVR API and the Voice API. For costs, see IVR pricing in India.

Sketch the flow on paper, record or generate the prompts, test with colleagues, and check call reports after launch. Voice campaigns that call customers should follow permitted hours and DND rules; see DND compliance in India and OBD voice broadcast.

IVR flow questions

How many menu levels should an IVR have?

Keep it to two levels at most. Deeper menus frustrate callers.

What should happen if the caller presses nothing?

Repeat the menu once, then route to an agent or take a callback.

Can an IVR make outbound calls?

Yes. Outbound IVR calls are used for reminders and confirmations, with the same rules for permitted hours and consent.

Can an IVR send a WhatsApp or SMS message?

It can trigger one after the call, for example with order details or a link.

How do I test an IVR?

Call it yourself, with colleagues and in each language, and review recordings and reports.
